Rector of the University of Łódź and Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities (1990–1996). Member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (1996–2006). President of the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law (2009–2012).

Minister of Science and Higher Education (2005–2007). Co-chair of the Scientific Council of the Polish Historical and Literary Society in Paris.
